FromSoftware’s Elden Ring has always offered depth and challenge, but with the arrival of Tarnished Edition, all eyes are on the new classes, weapons, and armor shaping the next phase of this world. While much of the buzz started with a popular fan-made mod, the line between community creativity and official content is beginning to blur - and that’s where things get interesting.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition

What is Elden Ring Tarnished Edition?

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is a newly announced expanded version of the original Elden Ring, set to release in 2025 alongside the Nintendo Switch 2, but also coming to other platforms like PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. This edition includes the base game, the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, four new armor sets (some inspired by characters from the Dark Souls series), new weapons, and three customization options for Torrent, the player’s spectral steed. Though initially mistaken by some as a simple port, the Tarnished Edition introduces meaningful additions to the game’s content and lore. While not officially part of this release, a popular community-created mod by the same name also brought attention to the idea of new classes - such as Vampire, Summoner, and Warden -highlighting the ongoing creativity and passion of the Elden Ring community.

What New Content in Elden Ring Tarnished Edition DLC?

At its core, Tarnished Edition is an all-in-one package. It includes:

New Classes: Fan-Made, Full-Fledged Archetypes

When players booted up a mod version of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, many expected small tweaks. What they found instead were entirely new class archetypes - each with unique systems, strategies, and lore. These aren’t just skin swaps or stat shuffles. These are new ways to experience the game.

  • Vampire
This class is a brutal survivor. It thrives by draining health from enemies, growing stronger in extended fights. The longer you stay alive, the more dangerous you become. It redefines close-quarters combat by rewarding aggression and endurance.

  • Summoner
No longer just a spirit bell user. The Summoner class comes with deeper control over spirit-based allies, allowing players to build tactical synergy between themselves and their summoned companions. Placement, timing, and spell variety matter more than ever.

  • Warden
A protector of the natural world, the Warden uses terrain manipulation and area control spells to reshape the battlefield. This class is built for players who prefer strategic dominance over brute force.

These classes weren’t released by FromSoftware. They were created by the community - but their depth and polish rival official designs. For longtime players, they offer a completely new flavor to an already rich game.

New Weapons: Familiar Blades, Fresh Mechanics

Both the official Tarnished Edition and the community mod bring new weapons to the fold - some of which are reimagined versions of fan favorites from the Dark Souls trilogy:

  • Mirror Greatsword
Originally wielded by Lucatiel of Mirrah in Dark Souls II, this blade returns with a move set that reflects its legacy. It’s heavy, deliberate, and powerful, and the new Ash of War included with it shifts its moveset dynamically - similar to how Onyx Lord's Greatsword functions in the base game.

  • Heavy Curved Sword
One of the new weapons revealed in the official expansion is a high-impact curved blade with a spinning slash weapon art. It’s paired with one of the new armored knights and looks built for aggressive melee builds.

  • Mystery Cape Weapon
Spotted in trailers and screenshots, this strange flowing cape is seen held in hand and attached at the waist. It may be a new weapon type, a tool, or even a combat accessory. Its exact purpose is still unknown, but it’s clearly more than a fashion choice.

New Armor Sets: Legends Return in Style

Four new Elden Ring armor sets are coming to Tarnished Edition, and three of them are already known - each referencing iconic characters from Dark Souls.

  • Lucatiel of Mirrah’s Armor
Faithfully recreated with subtle changes, this armor brings a beloved NPC into the Elden Ring world. The fact that it retains Lucatiel’s name suggests more than a visual callback - it may be a canonical crossover.

  • Henri and Horace-Inspired Sets
Drawing from Dark Souls III, these armors are reimagined for Elden Ring, hinting at new class identities or origin stories. One set is designed for a lighter knight, while the other is bulkier and paired with the aforementioned curved weapon.

  • Unrevealed Fourth Set
The final armor set hasn’t been shown yet. Fans speculate it could be based on characters from Dark Souls I, possibly the Armor of Favor or another lesser-known but lore-rich design.

Each set isn’t just armor, it’s a piece of design philosophy. These are carefully chosen references that could reshape how we interpret the Lands Between and its connections to past games.

The mix of new official content and fan-made material shows that Elden Ring still has room to grow. The community has made it clear: there’s demand for fresh systems, not just balance patches or visual tweaks. These new classes, weapons, and armor reflect that momentum.

Players aren’t just looking to repeat the same builds—they want tools that change how the game feels. The modding community answered that call first, and now FromSoftware is following suit through Tarnished Edition.
