Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH) 3.0 update brought an exciting new feature: a free resort hotel on your island! Run by Kapp'n and his adorable family—Leilani, Leila, and Grams—this hotel lets you decorate rooms, host visitors, and add more life to your island. Whether you love decorating or just want to meet new villagers, this guide will break down the ACNH 3.0 Hotel layout, rooms, and the decorating/design ideas for different hotel room themes.

ACNH 3.0 Resort Hotel Unlock, Room Themes & Decorating Ideas

The ACNH 3.0 Hotel is a new facility located right off your island’s pier. It’s a free addition for all players who update their game to version 3.0. Think of it as a cozy resort where villagers (and even special guests!) can stay during their visit to your island. As the island representative, your main job is to decorate the hotel rooms to attract visitors. It’s similar to Happy Home Paradise, but with a fun hotel twist—you get to create unique spaces for different guests while making your island feel more lively.

How Does the ACNH 3.0 Resort Hotel Work?

1. Unlock the Hotel

The hotel isn’t available right after updating to 3.0. You first need to earn a 3-star island rating, get K.K. Slider to perform on your island, and unlock Kapp’n’s boat tours. Once you hit these milestones, Isabelle will announce the hotel’s opening in her daily island broadcast. Construction starts the day K.K. Slider plays in the Resident Services plaza, and the hotel will be fully built at your island’s southern pier (the corner across the river from Resident Services) the next day.

Head to the pier to meet Kapp’n, Tom Nook, and Leilani in the lobby. Leilani will ask for your help decorating the guest rooms—this is your official start to running the resort!

2. Core Hotel Interactions with Leilani

Leilani at the front desk is your only go-to for all hotel tasks. When you talk to her, she’ll walk you through every key action in a simple, intuitive interface:

  • Pick an available room to decorate (your first room is a guided tutorial with a set theme).

  • View all the hotel rooms you’ve already designed—you can check guest status and even replace the room’s showcase photo at any time.

  • Track current hotel visitors and see which rooms are occupied or vacant.

  • Unlock the VIP Room and redecorate existing rooms (once you meet the unlock requirements).

ACNH 3.0 Hotel Layout, Floors & Features

The hotel has a warm, inviting single-floor layout (no extra floors to unlock—this was a common early rumor!) with a spacious lobby and 8 standard guest rooms, plus a VIP Room that unlocks later. Every corner is customizable, and the space is designed to feel like a cozy island resort for all your guests.

Lobby & Basic Features

The lobby is the heart of the hotel, with Leilani’s front desk, two mannequins for setting hotel outfits (guests and visiting players can wear these!), and Grams’ Souvenir Shop (a small store with exclusive hotel-themed items). The back of the lobby has a staircase that leads directly to all the guest rooms—no confusing hallways, just easy access!

8 Standard Guest Rooms

All 8 standard rooms are on the same floor, with one guest per room at a time (you can host up to 7 tourists/guests at once—one room is always vacant for new visitors). Every room lets you customize everything: furniture, wallpaper, flooring, lighting, and even ambient soundscapes (if you have the Happy Home Paradise DLC). Some themes, like the Seaside Room, have small outdoor-facing doors—perfect for adding patio furniture, plants, or beach decor to match the vibe.

VIP Room (Unlocked Later)

A special VIP Room is added to the hotel once you finish decorating all 8 standard rooms. It’s a premium space for exclusive guests (invited via amiibo or special tourists) and has its own unique decorating rules.

Hotel Guests: Who Stays & What They Do

Your hotel hosts tourists (unique island visitors) and random villagers. These guests bring the hotel to life, and they have fun, interactive behaviors that make your island feel more dynamic:

  • Wander the island: You’ll spot hotel guests exploring your beaches, parks, and talking to your permanent villagers—you might even see 2-3 hanging out together!

  • Wear hotel outfits: They’ll don the custom outfits you set on the lobby mannequins (note: animal guests won’t wear pants, socks, or shoes—they stick to tops and accessories!).

  • Stay for 1 day: All guests leave the next day, making space for new visitors to check in.

  • Need lodging: Occasionally, you’ll find a tourist deep in thought on your island—talk to them to invite them to the vacant room (you’ll earn 50 Hotel Tickets for this!).

How to Invite Special Guests

To invite specific Animal Crossing characters (villagers or even Zelda/Splatoon crossover villagers) to the hotel, use the amiibo scanner at Leilani’s front desk (unlocked with the VIP Room). Scan any ACNH or crossover amiibo, and the character will stay in the VIP Room—they’ll ask for a custom-decorated space just for them!

ACNH 3.0 Hotel Room Themes

This is the most important part of the hotel: its official room themes. Unlike early unconfirmed rumors (e.g., Moroccan or Zen themes), Nintendo has released the exact official themes for standard and VIP rooms—with 15 standard themes (8 rooms, 2 theme choices for most) and 45 exclusive VIP themes to choose from. Every theme has a recommended furniture tab to make decorating easy, and you can always mix and match items from your catalog (following the theme is totally optional!).

All furniture you’ve ever owned is available in the decorating menu, and you can customize item colors (hover and press X) and use hotel-branded items from Grams’ Souvenir Shop (only theme-matching hotel items are usable for free—buy the rest to unlock them permanently). Add a music player to any room, and a K.K. Slider song matching the theme will play automatically—perfect for boosting the vibe!

Standard Room Themes (8 Rooms, 15 Official Themes)

You unlock 2 standard rooms per day (1 on some days) by finishing the previous room(s). For every room after the first, you get to choose between 2 themes—pick the one you love most! The first room is a fixed tutorial theme (Seaside Room), and all others have a choice. Below is the official unlock order and theme pairs, plus pro decorating ideas for each:

The VIP Room unlocks the day after finishing all 8 standard rooms, and it comes with a massive list of 45 exclusive themes (you can also use all 15 standard themes!). This room is only for amiibo-invited characters or special tourists, and you must redesign it from scratch for every new VIP guest (it has no permanent theme). Inviting a guest to the VIP Room earns you 300 Hotel Tickets (vs. 50 for a standard room)—well worth the extra design work!

Once unlocked, talk to Leilani to redecorate any standard room—you can change the theme, redo the decor, or even design it with no theme at all! Redecorate one room completely each day, and Leilani will reward you with 200 Hotel Tickets (even if you just pick a new theme and place one piece of furniture!). After unlocking redecorating, standard rooms can use any of the 15 original standard themes (not just their initial pair). The 30 VIP-exclusive themes are available only in the VIP Room.
