Season 16 of Diablo 2 Resurrected drops on November 13th, and with it comes one of the wildest runeword reworks the game has ever seen. The Eternity runeword, once a forgotten relic that almost nobody bothered to craft outside of Holy Grail runs, has been reborn as a monster piece of gear that is already being called best-in-slot for a huge chunk of character archetypes. In this D2R new eternity runeword guide, we explains why it has a strong shot at becoming the defining BiS item of the 3.4 ladder reset, and sort out the top builds you can run with it from day one in the Season 13.
D2R Season 16 Eternity Update
Before jumping into the builds, it helps to see exactly what Blizzard reworked on this runeword. The 3.4 patch notes contain some of the most aggressive buffs we have seen in a single item update.
New Base Options
Eternity used to be locked to 5-socket melee weapons only. In patch 3.4, it can now be rolled in both 5-socket melee weapons and 5-socket missile weapons. That means bows, crossbows, two-handers, spears, and polearms all open up as viable crafting bases.
Updated Stat Line
The runeword now carries the following stats at top rolls:
Indestructible
30% Increased Attack Speed (brand new)
300 to 390% Enhanced Damage (up from 260 to 310%)
3 to 297 Maximum Damage Based on Character Level (new mod)
Plus 5 to Revive (O-skill, replacing the old Level 8 Revive with 88 charges)
20% Chance of Crushing Blow
Hit Blinds Target
Slows Target by 33%
7% Life Stolen Per Hit
Replenish Life +16
Regenerate Mana 16%
Cannot Be Frozen
30% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
The Numbers Speak for Themselves
In a perfect-rolled superior Berserker Axe, Eternity hits roughly 190 to 832 damage with a 405% enhanced damage multiplier. In a Caduceus, the top-end damage climbs over 800 as well. In an ethereal Matriarchal Bow, you are looking at the fastest attack speed breakpoints paired with insane base damage. The runeword cost sits at Amn plus Ber plus Ist plus Sol plus Sur, meaning two high runes plus a Sur rune, so this is a mid-to-late ladder craft.
D2R Season 16 Best Eternity Builds
Now for the fun part. These are the builds that take the most advantage of what Eternity brings to the table. Each one leans on a different aspect of the runeword, from raw damage to revive armies to ranged dominance.
1. Max Revive Frenzy Barbarian
This is the showcase build that proves just how far the plus-skill revive stacking can go. A Frenzy Barb with Eternity and max plus-skill gear can field up to 21 revives with Battle Command running, turning a solo melee class into a one-man army. The damage from Frenzy itself hits around 12K baseline before Berserk procs, and the revive wall soaks hits and spreads auras from your mercenary across the whole screen.
Stats Distribution
Follow a standard strength-first layout to meet gear requirements, with no points wasted on unneeded attributes.
Strength: Enough to equip your gear, with the Veil of Steel 192 Strength requirement being the main target.
Dexterity: Only enough for Berserker Axe and Monarch shield base requirements. Max block on a dual-wield Frenzy Barb is not needed.
Vitality: Dump every leftover point here. A larger life pool lets you tank hits while reviving and casting shouts.
Energy: No points. Shouts cost mana but gear and leech cover it.
Skill Tree
This build leans on Frenzy for your main attack while stacking Warcries for revive utility and buffs.
Frenzy (Max): Your primary attack. The movement speed and attack speed bonuses from Frenzy stacking combo perfectly with the 30 IAS on Eternity.
Double Swing and Double Throw: One point each as prerequisites, which also feeds synergy damage into Frenzy.
Battle Orders (Max): Massive life and mana boost for you and your revives. The plus-skill stacking pushes BO past level 20.
Battle Command: One point. The plus one all skills on cast is what lets you hit 21 revives.
Shout: One point. Extra defense for the whole army.
Weapon Mastery (Sword or Axe Max): Depending on your Eternity base.
Taunt or Find Item: One point in Find Item helps for farming the Travincal council for your runes.
Endgame Gear Setup
This build's foundation is dual Eternity axes supported by max plus-skill stacking across every slot.
Weapons: Two Ethereal Eternity Berserker Axes (Amn + Ber + Ist + Sol + Sur). Double-stacking gives you Plus 10 to Revive from the weapons alone.
Helm: Veil of Steel with a Protector Stone jewel socketed. The reworked Plus 2 to All Skills, 25% physical damage reduction, and 40% magic resist beats Shako defensively.
Armor: Enigma for teleport. Repositioning your revive army is painful without it.
Amulet: Highlord's Wrath for plus one all skills, deadly strike, and IAS. Metalgrid works as an alternative if you need attack rating.
Rings: Two Bul-Kathos Wedding Bands for plus 2 total skills and life bonus.
Belt: Arachnid Mesh. Plus one skills and the slow effect stacks with Eternity.
Boots: Gore Riders for Crushing Blow and Deadly Strike.
Gloves: Steel Rend or Dracul's Grasp for life tap and extra damage.
Charms: Hellfire Torch (Barbarian), Annihilus, Barbarian Combat GCs with plus one Warcries for extra revive scaling.
Mercenary Setup (Act 2 Might Mercenary)
Stack as many auras as possible on the merc to multiply revive damage.
Aura base: Might aura from the Act 2 Nightmare Offensive merc.
Merc Armor: Bramble for level 21 Thorns aura. Revives benefit from the thorns, letting the army reflect damage back at tough enemies.
Merc Weapon: Pride polearm for level 20 Concentration. This combination of Might, Concentration, Thorns, and your Battle Orders turns the revive stack into a damage pile.
Merc Helm: Andariel's Visage with a Ral rune for the plus two skills boost to Might aura and the fire resistance patch.
2. Eternity Strafe/Multishot Bowazon
With missile weapons now in play, the Bowazon finally gets a weapon that pushes her past Faith and Windforce. In a Grand Matron Bow or Matriarchal Bow, Eternity delivers numbers older bow builds could only dream about, with Guided Arrow around 17K and Multishot around 12K per arrow.
Stats Distribution
Full glass-cannon dexterity layout for max physical damage scaling.
Strength: Enough to equip Fortitude and Razor Tail. Roughly 118 to 138 base depending on your armor base.
Dexterity: Dump the vast majority here. Dexterity scales bow physical damage directly, which multiplies with Eternity's enhanced damage.
Vitality: Only what you need to survive Players 8 content, around 60 to 80 base points.
Energy: Zero. Mana comes from leech and the Mana regen on Eternity.
Skill Tree
Full physical damage bow tree with pierce support.
Strafe (Max): Your main clear skill. Hits the 7-frame-per-attack breakpoint with Eternity's 30 IAS.
Guided Arrow (Max): Boss killer. Guided Arrow ignores target defense and bosses melt from the raw damage.
Multiple Shot: One point if you prefer wide clear, or max it as an alternative to Strafe.
Critical Strike (Max): Flat damage multiplier that stacks with Deadly Strike from Highlord's and Gore Riders.
Penetrate (Max): Attack rating boost since Eternity does not have ignore target defense.
Pierce (Max): 69 hard points plus gear brings you over the 100% pierce cap.
Valkyrie: One point for a meat shield summon that stacks nicely alongside your Eternity revives.
Dodge, Avoid, Evade: One point each as passives.
Endgame Gear Setup
The whole kit revolves around hitting 7 frames per attack while maximizing physical damage output.
Weapon: Ethereal Eternity in Matriarchal Bow (Amn + Ber + Ist + Sol + Sur). Matriarchal Bow is preferred for its native increased attack speed. A Mania on-swap bow procs Burst of Speed to help hit the 138 IAS breakpoint.
Helm: Giant Skull or Jeweler's Diadem of the Vampire with Protector Stone jewel. Alternative is a Rare Circlet with Plus 2 Amazon, 20 FCR, and life.
Armor: Fortitude for the 300 Enhanced Damage boost. Chains of Honor works if you want more resistance.
Amulet: Highlord's Wrath for deadly strike and IAS, or Cat's Eye for faster run walk if you need movement.
Rings: Raven Frost is optional since Eternity grants Cannot Be Frozen. Wisp Projector plus a dual-leech rare is the preferred combo.
Belt: Razor Tail for the 33% pierce.
Boots: Gore Riders for Deadly Strike stacking with Highlord's.
Gloves: Laying of Hands for the 350% damage to demons in Chaos Sanctuary farming. Crafted Blood gloves work for life leech setups.
Charms: Annihilus, Hellfire Torch (Amazon), max damage small charms, Bowazon Grand Charms with plus one Bow and Crossbow skills.
Mercenary Setup (Act 1 Rogue Mercenary)
A ranged merc that layers aura support with physical damage.
Weapon: Faith bow. Fanaticism aura buffs your damage and attack speed, pushing you well over the IAS breakpoint.
Armor: Fortitude for Enhanced Damage.
Helm: Andariel's Visage with Ral rune for IAS and life leech support.
Act 2 Alternative: Act 2 Might merc with Infinity polearm. Infinity's Conviction aura breaks lightning immunities, letting your Lightning Fury swap handle anything physical-immune.
3. Enchant Eternity Sorceress with Revive Army
This is the sleeper pick of the season. Enchant Sorceresses can throw roughly 4,000 fire damage onto every single revive, and with 20 to 30 revives active at once, you get a mobile fire damage swarm that melts bosses in seconds.
Stats Distribution
Balanced caster-ranger hybrid layout to support both bow damage and spell casting.
Strength: Enough for Razor Tail and your armor base, around 95 to 118.
Dexterity: Enough for your bow base plus a buffer for attack rating. The bow still fires but is secondary to the enchanted revives.
Vitality: Everything else. You will be in the middle of combat teleporting your army around.
Energy: Zero. Insight on the merc covers mana.
Skill Tree
Fire tree focus with cold tree support for defensive utility.
Enchant (Max): Core skill. Buffs you, your merc, and every revived monster with huge fire damage.
Fire Mastery (Max): Multiplies the enchant fire damage output across the whole army.
Warmth (Max): Mana regen support plus a synergy point into Enchant.
Fire Bolt: Prerequisite points only.
Static Field: One point. Still useful for stripping boss life percentages.
Teleport: One point. Mandatory for repositioning the army.
Frozen Armor or Shiver Armor: One point for defensive utility.
Endgame Gear Setup
Pierce stacking plus plus-skills to push Enchant damage per revive sky-high.
Weapon: Ethereal Eternity in Matriarchal Bow. Fire the bow for backup damage while the enchanted army tanks.
Helm: Harlequin Crest Shako with Um rune, or a Rare 2 Sorc 20 FCR Circlet.
Armor: Enigma for teleport and Plus 2 all skills.
Amulet: Mara's Kaleidoscope or a Rare Plus 2 Sorc amulet.
Rings: Two Stone of Jordan rings for plus skills and mana. Alternative is one SoJ and one Wisp Projector.
Belt: Razor Tail for 33% pierce.
Boots: Gore Riders for Deadly Strike, or War Travelers for magic find.
Gloves: Lava Gauntlet with the reworked 5% chance to proc Enchant on striking, which refreshes your army buff automatically.
Charms: Annihilus, Hellfire Torch (Sorceress), Fire Facet charms, plus one Fire skill Grand Charms.
Mercenary Setup (Act 2 Holy Freeze Mercenary)
Lower Resist aura support pushes fire damage past immunities.
Weapon: Infinity for Conviction aura, which lowers fire resistance and breaks lightning immunities.
Armor: Fortitude for merc survival and extra damage.
Helm: Andariel's Visage with a Ral rune. The level two aura boost from Andariel's lifts the merc's Holy Freeze higher.
Alternative: Act 3 Cold merc with a Lower Resist wand for stronger fire damage amp against bosses.
4. Zeal Paladin with Two-Handed Eternity
A two-handed Eternity in a Colossus Sword or Decapitator pushes top-end damage past 1,200 per hit before any buffs. Zealots were already strong, but this version takes them into new territory with a revive army rolling alongside Fanaticism.
Stats Distribution
Follow a standard strength-first layout to meet gear requirements, with no wasted points on unnecessary attributes.
Strength: Put enough points to equip your gear, with the Veil of Steel 192 Strength requirement being the main target.
Dexterity: Only the Dexterity required for your Caduceus or Colossus Sword base, around 60 to 90. Max block is not needed since you may run two-handed.
Vitality: All leftover stat points go into Vitality. Using Revive costs you life, so extra life helps you stay stable while summoning.
Energy: No points. Mana comes from gear bonuses and regeneration.
Skill Tree
This build leans heavily on Fanaticism to buff your Revive minions, paired with Zeal for your own melee attacks.
Fanaticism (Max): Your main aura. At high levels it delivers strong attack rating, attack speed and damage for every revived monster you bring out. Testing found level 42 Fanaticism gives the best overall buffs for your army.
Zeal (Max): Your personal attacking skill, used alongside Fanaticism for single-target damage when your Revive army struggles or dies off.
Sacrifice (Max): Synergy for Zeal, directly adds damage to each Zeal hit.
Holy Shield: One point if two-handing with Eternity, max if running a one-hand plus shield setup.
Conversion (Optional): You can try Conversion, but it has notable downsides. Extra points only raise the conversion chance; duration stays locked at 16 seconds, and converted minions cannot follow you through teleport.
Prerequisite skills: Put only the minimum required points to unlock Zeal and Fanaticism.
Endgame Gear Setup
The build's heart is the updated Eternity runeword. D2R Patch 3.4 changes Eternity from Revive charges to +5 Revive as an oskill, which is the feature that makes this summoner Paladin work.
Weapon: Ethereal Eternity in Caduceus base (Amn + Ber + Ist + Sol + Sur). A rolled +3 Fanaticism Paladin-only Caduceus is the dream base. Delivers +5 Revive, 30% Increased Attack Speed, up to 390% Enhanced Damage, Crushing Blow, Slow Target that stacks with Arachnid Mesh, Cannot Be Frozen, and Magic Find. Indestructible, so the ethereal downside is a non-issue.
Helm: Veil of Steel. The reworked Spired Helm grants +2 to All Skills, high all resistances, magic resistance, physical damage reduction, and extra Strength and Vitality. Socket a Protector Stone for single-target performance. Its high Strength requirement is the main drawback.
Armor: Enigma. Supplies Faster Run/Walk, +2 All Skills, and teleport. Teleport is mandatory for repositioning your Revive group.
Amulet: Atma's Scarab. Chance to cast Amplify Damage on striking, lowering enemy physical resistance for your minions. Keep in mind Amplify Damage is a curse and can conflict with Hit Blinds Target from Eternity. Swap to Mara's Kaleidoscope if you want extra resist and plus skills instead.
Shield: Spirit Monarch. Provides +2 All Skills, Faster Cast Rate, resistances, and mana. Only used if running one-hand Eternity in Caduceus.
Rings: One Bul-Kathos Wedding Band for +1 to all skills; fill the second ring slot based on missing resistances or stats.
Boots: Gore Riders. Standard melee boots supplying Crushing Blow and Open Wounds for your Zeal hits.
Belt: Arachnid Mesh. Adds Faster Cast Rate and the slow effect that stacks with Eternity's Slow Target modifier.
Alternative Shield Option (Marshal's Sacred Targe of Rancor): This rare Paladin shield is a fun experimental swap with +3 Offensive Auras, solid all resistances, and Sigil: Rancor charges that buff nearby minions with attack speed and damage. In practice, the effect range is small, and Revive AI is inconsistent. Not a reliable main pick, only for testing.
Weapon Swap (Harmony Bow): Harmony grants Revive charges, and your existing revived monsters do not disappear when you switch. Cast extra Revives while holding Harmony to collect more bodies safely. A key rule: if you summon higher-level Revives from Harmony, switching back to Eternity caps the Revive level to your oskill limit, and excess minions will die until you hit your cap.
Mercenary Setup (Act 2 Might Mercenary)
Your merc stacks extra auras to multiply Revive damage.
Aura base: Might aura from the Act 2 merc.
Merc Armor: Bramble, providing level 21 Thorns aura.
Merc Weapon: Pride polearm, granting level 20 Concentration aura. The stack of Might, Concentration, your own Fanaticism plus Bramble's Thorns is the strongest known aura combination for boosting Revive damage. If your merc dies, you lose these supporting auras, and your army's damage drops sharply.
Merc Helm: Andariel's Visage with Ral rune for IAS, life leech, and the plus two aura boost.
5. Fire Claw Werebear or Fury Werewolf Druid
The Druid gets some of the best mileage out of Eternity in a two-handed base. The Earthshaker rework also plays into this with Plus 5 to Fire Claws, but Eternity in a Decapitator or Great Poleaxe is the raw damage pick. Fury's physical damage benefits directly from the max damage per character level roll, and the Druid's spirit summons stack beautifully with the revive army.
Stats Distribution
Strength-heavy layout to meet two-handed weapon requirements.
Strength: Enough for Jalal's Mane and your Eternity base. Great Poleaxe or Thunder Maul bases need a hefty 118 to 192 depending on the choice.
Dexterity: Just enough for your Eternity weapon base. No max block since you are two-handing.
Vitality: All remaining points. Werebear or Werewolf forms already add life bonus, and extra Vitality keeps you alive on Players 8.
Energy: Zero. Shapeshift costs are low and Insight on the merc handles mana regen.
Skill Tree
Fury tree focus with spirit summoning support.
Fury (Max): Main attack. The multi-hit chain combos with Eternity's Crushing Blow and max damage mod.
Lycanthropy (Max): Life bonus and werewolf form duration.
Werewolf (Max): Attack speed and damage bonus for the shapeshift form.
Heart of Wolverine (One Point, scales with gear): Attack rating and damage spirit. Plus-skill gear pushes it past level 20 for army-wide buffs.
Oak Sage (Optional, one point): Life bonus spirit for your revive army.
Summon Dire Wolves (Max if going full army): Three permanent wolves that stack on top of your revives.
Summon Grizzly (One point): Tanky bear summon.
Endgame Gear Setup
Two-handed Eternity leveraging physical scaling and summon synergy.
Weapon: Ethereal Eternity in Great Poleaxe or Thunder Maul (Amn + Ber + Ist + Sol + Sur). Two-handed gets the full benefit of the 390 Enhanced Damage roll.
Helm: Jalal's Mane for plus two Druid skills, resists, and IAS. Alternative is a Rare Druid Pelt with plus three Fury.
Armor: Fortitude for the massive Enhanced Damage boost. Chains of Honor is the resist-focused alternative.
Amulet: Highlord's Wrath for Deadly Strike and IAS, or a Rare plus two Druid amulet.
Rings: Raven Frost is optional since Eternity has Cannot Be Frozen. Run Angelic Ring plus Amulet combo for a huge attack rating boost, or two Bul-Kathos rings for plus skills.
Belt: Verdungo's Hearty Cord for Vitality and damage reduction.
Boots: Gore Riders for Deadly Strike and Crushing Blow stacking.
Gloves: Steel Rend or Dracul's Grasp. Dracul's life tap proc is a game-changer for sustain.
Charms: Annihilus, Hellfire Torch (Druid), Druid Shapeshifting Grand Charms with plus one and life.
Mercenary Setup (Act 2 Might Mercenary)
Standard physical damage aura stack.
Weapon: Pride polearm for Concentration aura.
Armor: Bramble for Thorns aura, feeding your revive army and summons.
Helm: Andariel's Visage with Ral rune for IAS and resist patch.
Aura: Might for base physical damage multiplier on your Fury hits.
6. Blood Boil Warlock
For players running the Warlock class, Eternity pairs with the Blood Boil skill to create one of the most chaotic AoE setups in the game. Blood Boil corpse-explodes your minions for a percentage of their life, and with Eternity's revive army feeding the explosion chain, you get a nonstop fireworks show.
Stats Distribution
Hybrid caster-melee layout, since Warlock uses both bodies and spells.
Strength: Enough for Veil of Steel and your Eternity base. The 192 Veil of Steel requirement is the main hurdle.
Dexterity: Enough for your weapon base plus a buffer for block if running a shield.
Vitality: All remaining points. Blood Boil scales with your minions' life, and your own life pool helps you survive while summoning.
Energy: Zero. Warlock has its own mana sustain through gear and leech.
Skill Tree
Blood tree primary with minion mastery support.
Blood Boil (Max): Core AoE skill. Detonates minions and revives for massive percentage-based damage.
Blood Warp or healing skill (One point, scaling with gear): Sustain to keep the army refilled.
Summon Mastery (Max if available): Boosts revive and summon health, which directly scales Blood Boil damage.
Amplify Damage equivalent (Max if the class has it): Lowers enemy physical resistance for huge Blood Boil hits.
Teleport skill (One point): Repositioning the army is key.
Endgame Gear Setup
Plus-skill stacking for maximum revive count and Blood Boil levels.
Weapon: Ethereal Eternity in Berserker Axe or Caduceus. The one-hand setup lets you run a shield for defensive bonuses.
Helm: Veil of Steel with Protector Stone jewel. The plus two skills, physical damage reduction, and magic resist make it the top Warlock helm.
Armor: Chains of Honor for plus two skills, massive resistances, and damage reduction. Enigma is the alternative if you want teleport.
Amulet: Mara's Kaleidoscope for plus two skills and all resistances. Highlord's works if you need IAS.
Shield: Spirit Monarch for Faster Cast Rate, plus skills, and resists.
Rings: Two Bul-Kathos Wedding Bands, or one Stone of Jordan plus one dual-leech rare.
Belt: Arachnid Mesh for plus skills, Faster Cast Rate, and slow stacking with Eternity.
Boots: Marrowwalk for the bone prison bug, or War Travelers for magic find.
Gloves: Trang-Oul's Claws for the extra poison and curse synergy, or Magefist for Faster Cast Rate.
Charms: Annihilus, Hellfire Torch (Warlock), plus one Blood skill Grand Charms, Faster Cast Rate small charms.
Mercenary Setup (Act 2 Might Mercenary)
Aura stacking to buff both revives and Warlock summons.
Weapon: Pride polearm for Concentration aura, buffing physical damage on all your minions.
Armor: Bramble for level 21 Thorns aura, which combines beautifully with Blood Boil's corpse detonation chain.
Helm: Andariel's Visage with Ral rune for IAS and life leech support.
Alternative: Infinity polearm for Conviction aura if you want to break lightning immunities for mixed content.
Why the New Eternity Runeword Could Be Meta in D2R Season 16
With the raw numbers laid out, the next question is why this specific item has the community buzzing. The answer comes down to how many problems it solves on a single weapon slot.
It Outclasses Grief in Pure Damage
Grief has been the undisputed king of one-handed physical damage for years. Running the calcs with a perfect Eternity Berserker Axe against a Grief Phase Blade with Highlord's, Gore Riders, and Laying of Hands, Eternity edges Grief out in average damage, especially against non-demon targets. Grief still wins against demons because of damage-to-demons stacking, but for general farming, Eternity pulls ahead.
It Replaces Multiple Gear Slots
The runeword comes with Cannot Be Frozen baked in, which frees up your Raven Frost ring slot for a dual-leech rare, a Wisp Projector, or a Manald Heal. The 20% Crushing Blow means you can skip crushing blow gear in some setups. The Slows Target 33% adds defensive utility normally reserved for a Rime of the Ancients or similar niche items.
The O-Skill Revive Changes Everything
Instead of 88 charges that eventually run dry, Eternity now hands every single class a free Plus 5 Revive skill with no cooldown and no charge limit. That turns Zealots, Barbarians, Druids, Amazons, Sorceresses, and even Hammerdins into part-time summoners. Stack plus-skill gear and you can field 10 or more revives at once.
It Works in Bows
The addition of missile weapons as a valid base is what pushes this item from strong to busted. Bowazons who previously ran Faith or Windforce now have a weapon that outperforms both in raw damage output. Mathematically, an Eternity Grand Matron Bow does roughly 3,000 more guided arrow damage than a Windforce setup at the same breakpoints.
It Is Universally Applicable
Not many weapons work on casters, melee characters, and bow users all at once. Eternity does. Whether you want to fire arrows, swing an axe, cast enchant, or run around with hammers while a revive army does the heavy lifting, this runeword fits.
Season 16 goes live November 13th. Farm runes, setup a new Eternity build, and prepare to put the most reworked runeword in D2R history to good use.
