If your goal in Path of Exile 3.29 is to reach Level 100 as quickly as possible, two of the strongest options currently available are Abyss and Breach farming. While Breach has been one of the standout XP and currency strategies of the league, recent Abyss buffs have created a new alternative focused almost entirely on speed and experience. We'll compare PoE 3.29 Abyss vs Breach, covering the Atlas tree, scarabs, map setup, XP rates, profitability, build requirements, and playstyle to help you decide which strategy is best for your Level 100 push.

PoE 3.29 Abyss vs Breach: Which Is Better for Level 100?
After testing a heavily juiced Abyss strategy against a previous budget Breach setup, the results are surprisingly close—but Abyss comes out ahead in raw XP per hour. The Abyss setup reached an average of around 121 million XP per hour from Level 99 to 100, compared with roughly 90 million XP per hour for the Breach strategy.
However, XP isn't the only factor worth considering. Breach offers substantially better loot potential, including valuable Foulborn uniques and other high-value drops, while Abyss sacrifices much of that profit potential in exchange for extremely fast map completion. This means the best strategy ultimately depends on your build, your priorities, and whether you care more about reaching Level 100 quickly or making currency along the way.
PoE 3.29 Abyss vs Breach: Quick Comparison
| Category | Abyss | Breach |
|---|---|---|
| XP per hour | ~121M XP/h | ~90–100M XP/h |
| Map duration | Very short | Longer |
| Map cycling | Extremely fast | Slower |
| Loot | Moderate | Excellent |
| Foulborn gambling | No | Yes |
| Build requirements | Relatively low | Higher |
| Playstyle | Simple and repetitive | Fast-paced and demanding |
| Level 100 potential | Excellent | Excellent |
| Main advantage | Maximum XP/hour | XP + PoE Currency |
The important caveat is that these numbers come from specific testing rather than a universal benchmark. Abyss XP can vary significantly depending on the monsters generated in each encounter, while Breach performance depends heavily on how quickly your build can clear and move between encounters.
PoE 3.29 Abyss Leveling Strategy
The new Abyss strategy is designed around one simple principle:
Spend as little time as possible inside each map and immediately start another one. The recommended map is City Square, where the Abyss can naturally travel along the four edges of the map. Rather than spending time clearing the entire map, you follow the Abyss path around the square, opening every pit and killing the monsters as quickly as possible. Once the Abyss has been completely cleared, you immediately leave and start another map. This creates an extremely high map-per-hour rate.
Recommended Scarabs
The setup uses:
2× Multitude Scarabs
3× Abyss Scarabs
Multitude provides 100% increased monsters, while the Abyss Scarabs help extend the Abyss encounters across the map and fill the four sides of City Square. The goal isn't to maximize the amount of loot you can pick up. Instead, you're trying to maximize the number of monsters—and therefore the amount of XP—you can kill in the shortest possible time.
Recommended Maps
The strategy uses regular Tier 16 eight-mod maps.
Because the maps are completed extremely quickly, you'll need a large supply of them ready to go. The testing used roughly 20–30 eight-mod maps in bulk, allowing the player to continuously chain maps without stopping to prepare another one.
The Atlas tree also takes advantage of increased map modifiers because stronger eight-mod maps produce more monsters and therefore more XP.
How to Run the Abyss Strategy in PoE 3.29
The actual gameplay loop is extremely simple.
Step 1: Enter City Square
Immediately start following the Abyss along the edges of the map.
Step 2: Clear Every Abyss Pit
Run up and down the four sides of the square, opening every pit and killing the monsters. The objective is speed rather than loot.
Step 3: Save the Final Chest
Don't immediately open every chest you encounter. The most valuable Abyss reward comes from the final pit, where you have a chance to encounter a Skitterbot chest. Once you've cleared the final pit, quickly check whether the Skitterbot chest has spawned. If it hasn't, leave and start the next map. The testing suggested that the Skitterbot chest appeared roughly 50% of the time, although this is subject to RNG.
Step 4: Optional Boss Kill
If you want additional profit without significantly slowing down the strategy, you can quickly kill the three bosses in the center of City Square. This only adds a few seconds to the map and can provide additional valuable drops.
Step 5: Leave Immediately
Once the Abyss is finished, don't waste time looting the map. The entire strategy revolves around getting into the next map as quickly as possible.
PoE 3.29 Atlas Tree Setup
The Atlas tree is built around maximizing monster density and Abyss rewards. The core setup includes:
Full Abyss investment
Searing Exarch Altars
Beyond
Delirium
Increased explicit map modifiers
Increased Magic Monster density
Increased Rare Monster density
The Abyss nodes are particularly important because they increase the number and quality of monsters generated by the encounters. Beyond and Delirium provide additional monster density, creating another source of experience without requiring significant additional map time.
Why Searing Exarch Instead of Eater of Worlds?
The strategy favors Searing Exarch Altars because of how quickly their monsters appear. Eater of Worlds packs can take a little longer to spawn, which isn't ideal when your entire farming strategy is based on minimizing downtime. Searing Exarch monsters spawn immediately, making them a better fit for ultra-fast mapping.
Abyss XP Per Hour
The most impressive result from the testing was the XP rate. From Level 99 to 100, the Abyss setup averaged approximately:
121 million XP per hour
The previous Breach strategy averaged approximately:
90 million XP per hour
That's roughly a 34% higher XP/hour rate for the Abyss setup based on those test results. However, Abyss XP has significant RNG. Individual results ranged from approximately 65 million XP/hour to nearly 200 million XP/hour, depending on the quality and density of the Abyss encounters. Some Abysses generated enormous numbers of Magic and Rare monsters, while others were considerably less rewarding. The player ultimately reached Level 100 after approximately 76 maps, although they already had some experience before beginning the test.
Abyss vs Breach: Which Gives More XP?
Based on the testing, Abyss wins in raw XP/hour.
The main reason isn't necessarily that each Abyss encounter provides dramatically more experience than Breach. Instead, the entire strategy is optimized around map cycling speed.
You finish a City Square extremely quickly, leave, load the next map, and repeat.
Breach works differently.
You spend several minutes inside each map continuously clearing Breaches and generating experience. A strong build can achieve around 90–100 million XP/hour from Level 99 to 100, but the strategy doesn't rely on the same rapid map turnover.
This creates an interesting trade-off.
Abyss: higher XP/hour through speed.
Breach: longer maps with more sustained XP and significantly better loot.
Breach Still Has One Major Advantage: Profit
This is where Breach pulls ahead. Breach isn't simply an XP farm. It can generate substantial currency while you're leveling. The biggest advantage is the ability to obtain Foulborn uniques, some of which can be extraordinarily valuable.
The testing specifically mentions Foulborn drops worth hundreds of Divines, with one particular jewel reportedly valued around 1,000 Divines. That kind of jackpot potential simply doesn't exist to the same degree with the Abyss strategy. Abyss can still generate Path of Exile currency, however.
During the testing, hourly profit appeared to be roughly in the 10–16 Divine range, although the player wasn't formally tracking profit per hour and some of the variation came from purchasing scarabs. One hour produced:
2 Valdo's
2 Divine Orbs
Approximately 13 Divines worth of total value
Other hours produced approximately 10 and 16 Divines respectively. So Abyss isn't an unprofitable strategy. It's simply much more focused on XP.
Abyss vs Breach: Which Is Easier?
Interestingly, Abyss may be easier to execute mechanically. The strategy doesn't require constantly jumping between different Breach encounters or maintaining extremely high clear speed across an entire map. Instead, you simply follow the Abyss along the edge of City Square. This makes the gameplay relatively straightforward and relaxing. Breach, on the other hand, rewards builds that can:
Clear enormous packs instantly
Move extremely quickly
Kill enemies off-screen
Maintain high clear speed throughout the entire encounter
As a result, build choice is an important factor. A character that struggles with Breach may still perform extremely well with Abyss because the Abyss route is predictable and concentrated.
Which Strategy Should You Use for Level 100?
The answer depends on your priorities.
Choose Abyss If:
You want the highest possible XP/hour
Your main goal is reaching Level 100
You enjoy extremely fast maps
You don't care about picking up most loot
You want a relatively simple farming loop
Your build isn't optimized for Breach clearing
With the tested setup producing around 121 million XP/hour, Abyss is currently the stronger choice for pure leveling speed.
Choose Breach If:
You want XP and currency at the same time
Your build has exceptional clear speed
You enjoy fast-paced mapping
You want access to Foulborn uniques
You want the possibility of massive jackpot drops
You don't mind spending several minutes in each map
Breach remains one of the most attractive options for players who don't want to sacrifice profitability while leveling.
