How To Get & Pick Up Duplicate Splinters in Diablo 4?

Season 15 of Diablo 4 brought back the Hellfire Torch grind, and with it came one of the most frustrating issues players have run into: duplicate Splinters falling to the ground and going to waste. If you've been farming Helltides and watching perfectly good Splinters disappear because you already had one of that type, there's finally a community-found workaround that lets you save them. In this guide, we are going to talk about what Duplicate Splinters are, how they end up happening, and the step-by-step method you can use right now to stop losing them.

Diablo 4 Duplicate Splinters Pick Up & Save Way

Duplicate Splinters in Diablo 4 Season 15

Splinters are the key crafting ingredient in Season 15, used to forge Hellfire Coins which eventually combine into the Hellfire Torch. There are three types you need to collect: the Splinter of Terror, the Splinter of Hatred, and the Splinter of Destruction. Each character can only hold one of each type at a time, which is where the problem begins.

When you're farming Helltides, popping Reputation Caches, or opening the 50k boxes in Temis, Splinters drop at random. The issue is that if a Splinter of the same type you already carry drops on the ground, you simply cannot pick it up. The game won't let you stack them, and it won't let you store the extra one. It just sits there until the instance resets, wasted.

Many players have voiced frustration about this on forums and social media. Comments range from "I opened 50 boxes and got no splinter" to "the last ten caches gave me nothing," and when a duplicate finally drops, it feels even worse to leave it behind. Blizzard has hinted that the Hellfire Torch system is sticking around, and so far there's no official fix for the stacking problem. Thankfully, the community (big shoutout to Nasty TTV, who first shared this trick) found a workaround that actually works.

Before we get into the save method itself, let's first look at how these duplicates even come about in the first place.

How To Duplicate Splinters in Diablo 4 Season 15?

Duplicate Splinters aren't something you intentionally create. They happen as a byproduct of farming activity, and the more you farm, the more often you'll run into them.

Opening Reputation Caches

The main way duplicates appear is through Reputation Caches, particularly the 50k boxes you redeem in Temis. These caches have a chance to drop any of the three Splinter types randomly. If you already have a Splinter of Terror in your inventory and the cache rolls another Terror, it falls on the ground as a duplicate.

Running Helltides With Diablo's Primeval Power

The current best farming method is Helltides combined with Diablo's Primeval Power. This power gives you a huge boost to Helltide rewards and reputation gains. The faster you farm, the quicker you fill up Reputation Caches, and the more Splinter drops you generate. Naturally, more drops means more chances for duplicates to roll.

Echoes and Pop-Up Rifts

Keep an eye out for Echoes spawning during Helltide, and group up for pop-up rifts. Both give extra Splinter chances, and running these in a group causes reputation to climb fast. Again, more drops equals more duplicates over time.

Why Duplicates Hurt So Much

With Splinters not being stackable and taking no inventory slot efficiency, every duplicate that drops is a lost coin. Three Splinters (one of each type) craft into one Hellfire Coin, so losing even one Splinter sets you back on your Torch progression. Now that you know where duplicates come from, let's get into the actual workaround for picking them up.

How To Pick Up & Save Duplicate Splinters in Diablo 4 Season 15?

Here's the step-by-step process the community found. Fair warning upfront: it isn't elegant, and it requires another player. It does not work in Solo Self-Found mode. But if you play with friends or even just random online players, it works consistently.

What You Need Before Starting

You need two things set up ahead of time. First, you need a second character on your account, one that is missing the Splinter type that dropped as a duplicate on your main. If you don't have an alt, you can quickly roll a new one and still use it. Second, you need another player online who's willing to help. It doesn't need to be a close friend. Any random online player will do, since they can't scam you or steal the Splinter from the ground.

Step 1: Confirm the Duplicate Splinter Drop

Keep farming Helltides and opening your caches as normal. When a Splinter drops that matches one you're already holding, you'll see it on the ground and be unable to pick it up. That's your trigger to start the workaround.

Step 2: Invite Another Player To Your Party

Send a party invite to your friend or any available player. They need to accept and join your current game instance. Their job is simple: they are going to hold the server instance open while you swap characters.

Step 3: Leave Game and Switch Characters

Press Leave Game on your main character. Once you're back at the character select screen, pick the alt that does not currently have that Splinter type. For example, if the duplicate on the ground is a Splinter of Terror and your Warlock doesn't have one yet, log into your Warlock.

Step 4: Your Friend Must Decline The Prompt

This is the part people mess up most often, so pay attention. When you leave the game, your friend will get a pop-up asking if they want to return to their own world state or become the new party leader. They must decline this prompt. They need to stay inside your original instance where the duplicate Splinter is still lying on the ground. If they accept and leave, the instance resets and the Splinter is gone.

Step 5: Request To Rejoin The Party

Once you've loaded into your alt character's world, request to rejoin your friend's party. They'll send you an invite, and when you accept, you'll be pulled into the same instance where the Splinter is still sitting on the ground.

Step 6: Pick Up The Splinter On Your Alt

Walk your alt over to the location of the duplicate Splinter. Since this character doesn't have one of that type yet, you'll be able to pick it up normally. The Splinter is saved, no waste, no lost progress.

Step 7: Transfer Coins Back Later

Once your alt has picked up the Splinter, you can craft Hellfire Coins directly on that character. Coins can be transferred between characters freely through the stash, so you can send them back to your main whenever you want to combine them into a Torch. You can also keep farming on your main and repeat the process every time a duplicate drops.

Extra Tips To Make This Smoother

Keep a dedicated farming buddy in your friends list so you always have someone to call for the swap. You can also return the favor: if they have caches to open, you can hold their instance in the same way. For maximum farming efficiency, run Helltides with Diablo's Primeval Power active, and switch which Splinter type you're prioritizing based on what you still need. Right now, many players rotate between Hatred and Terror based on what their alts are missing.

Limitations To Keep In Mind

This trick isn't perfect. It won't work in Solo Self-Found. It requires coordination with another player, and if your friend disconnects before you rejoin, the Splinter is lost. It's also only useful if your alt is actually missing the Splinter type that dropped. If your main and alt both already have the same Splinter type, you're out of luck, as some players have already pointed out in community discussions.

Still, until Blizzard addresses the Splinter stacking issue directly, this is the best workaround available. It beats watching Splinters sit on the ground going to waste after hours of Helltide farming. Give it a try next time a duplicate drops, and never leave a Splinter behind again. GG, happy farming.
